Transformation of Double Fronted Dormer Property in Fortex Misty Grey Cladding - in Reading
Freefoam spoke to Homeowner Nigel Gardner in Reading about the Freefoam cladding he used on his dormer extension.
What was the dormer like originally?
“The two dormers had a flat lead roof with the walls covered in tiles.”
What work was carried out?
“Essentially we had the existing dormers rebuilt. We added hip roofs to both and extended the right hand dormer to include a new Juliette balcony and double doors.
I worked with a local architect to develop the scheme and ensure planning compliance.”
Why did you make these changes?
“Our teenage children needed more space so we decided to extend the dormers to create larger, more adaptable bedrooms.”
Did you look at different materials and other cladding options?
“We looked at replacing with tiles again, and thought about render but then found information about cladding. Cost was a factor and we liked the Freefoam cladding as it was suitable for our budget.”
Did you source the materials yourself?
“Yes. I went to a local supplier, Willmotts, who I had bought from before. They gave me brochures and put me in touch with the Freefoam technical advisor to answer my questions on fitting.”
Why did you choose Misty Grey?
“We wanted a lighter colour as the old tiles were very dark and drab. The cladding colour also informed our choice of render finish to the front porch, so that the whole project matched.”
Did you fit the cladding yourself?
“I employed a builder to construct the new dormers and new roof arrangement and then my brother and I completed the exterior cladding, windows, doors and interior fit out.”
How did you find the cladding system to fit?
“I found the system straightforward. The trims worked well and we found it easy to find the right trim finish for our particular situation. We had scaffolding up for the dormer refurbishment so were able to use this to fit the cladding.”
Was the cladding good value for money?
“We set ourselves a budget. With the average cost per sqmt coming in at around the cost of a family night at the cinema we found that by choosing the Freefoam cladding we were able get the look we wanted at a price that suited us.”
